Segmentation

What is segmentation?

Segmentation lets you group users by custom attributes—like plan type, monthly spend, company size, or region—so you can show the right content to the right people.

Instead of showing everything to everyone, you can target specific groups. Show premium features only to paid users. Send surveys to enterprise customers. Boost announcements to users in a specific region. Segmentation makes your widgets, surveys, and announcements more relevant.

Segmentation requires the Growth plan or higher and user identification via the Frill Script.

How segmentation works

The process has two steps:

  1. Send custom attributes — Pass user data through the Frill Script (plan, MRR, region, role, etc.)

  2. Create segments — Define groups based on those attributes using rules and conditions

Once you've created segments, you can use them to control visibility across Frill:

  • Widgets — Show or hide idea boards, roadmaps, and changelogs to specific segments

  • Surveys — Target NPS, CSAT, or custom surveys to specific user groups

  • Announcements — Boost changelogs to segments who care about specific features

Common use cases

Use segmentation to:

  • Show a premium roadmap only to paying customers

  • Send NPS surveys to users with MRR above $500

  • Target beta users with feature announcements

  • Hide enterprise features from free-tier users

  • Show region-specific content based on geography

Getting started

To start using segmentation:

  1. Set up custom user attributes — See Custom user attributes for segmentation

  2. Create your first segment — See Creating and using user segments

  3. Apply segments to your content:

Start simple. Create 2-3 basic segments (like "Paid Users" vs. "Trial Users") before building complex multi-condition rules.
